He even did his own rendition of ‘Teicht Do Roim / ‘Pilgrimage to Rome’, which I know he would allow me to reproduce here; ‘The journey to Rome /Much trouble, little gain! / the King here sought, / if not with you tonight , you will not attain,’ Leo had a deep regard for what is called the Celtic Church. For all the humour, entertainment, stories, encouragement and personality, there was another Leo. In the last months, when he knew he was fatally stricken, he exhibited a dignity and spiritual resignation characterised by a celebration of life itself.
He remained teaching and was the principal of the Loreto in Tallaght throughout the ‘seventies and ‘eighties. At the same time, he continued to lecture the Bolton St. architectural students, as well as to give archaeology courses at DIT Rathmines, St. Patrick’s Drumcondra and the Saor Ollscoil, and to give conference papers, extra murals, adult education and teachers’ courses. He loved France and frequently holidayed there with his family. On three occasions he was guest lecturer at the University of Bordeaux, and external examiner at the Department of Archaeology at Aix-en-Provence, where he examined post graduate theses. In 1995 he lectured in the USA at the university of Suffolk, Boston, and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, where his long-time friends Kathleen Ryan and Bernard Wailes are based.
