Prehistoric and Medieval site, Platin
quarry, Co. Meath
Extensive
archaeological material has been recovered at Platin quarry. This material has
given a unique view of life at different periods in antiquity and displays the
relationships between peoples and and their material cultures with the natural
environment.
Both prehistoric and medieval material is represented in the
sites identified. The prehistoric material, barrow and fulachta fiadh
(Sites
0, 2, 3 and 4) have been provisionally dated to the Bronze Age,
and the medieval material (Site 1) to the 13-14th Century AD.
The
earliest material identified comprises two hollow scrapers dating to the Neolithic
period. Excavations in Field 5 show potential prehistoric farming characteristics.
It appears that tree clearance (or vegetation removal) in antiquity has caused
successive phases of topsoil erosion and deposition sealing strata of Bronze Age
activity. At Platin Quarry Bronze Age settlement evidence is represented in the
structures and the exceptional fulachta fiadh uncovered.
