Three
excavations of fulacht fiadh activity have been conducted. Two of the completed
excavations are located adjacent to the townland boundary between Cruicerath and
Carranstown. This zone encompasses a level area at the base of a south facing
slope. The subsoil in which the fulacht fiadh activity has been recorded
consists of heavy silty clay, which displays some degree of imperviousness to
water. The entire site is crisscrossed with relatively modern drains. The most
unusual finding of the excavation of Site 0 was the identification of structural
remains. Six structures have been identified. They consisted of a vertical-sided
flat based slot trench.
Site
2 contains more common features of fulacht fiadh, a large burnt spread,
troughs and pits. However the scale of features, particularly the troughs and
the presence of a structure, make this an exceptional site.
Sites
4 and 5 also comprised a fulacht fiadh. Work on the periphery of this monument
has identified several strata of fulacht fiadh activity within hill washed topsoil
deposits. The features identified include a hearth and a trough, which was associated
with a hollow scraper find.
This kind of activity may indicate the early clearance
of vegetation and the subsequent erosion of topsoil. There is significant environmental
evidence for the transition between vegetation clearance and farming.
